In this post I will show you how to install a theme in WordPress. If you don’t know how to install WordPress on your system for development using WampServer then read the tutorial here. In the WordPress installation themes are stored in the ‘wordpress\wp-content\themes’ folder. First you can download the theme from WordPress theme repository https://wordpress.org/themes/ or any of the major sites that offer premium or free WordPress themes.
In my example I will show you how to install the default WordPress theme TwentyFifteen. Usually it will come pre installed with WordPress installation. First download the theme file from https://wordpress.org/themes/twentyfifteen/ and extract the zip file. Copy the downloaded file into the ‘wordpress\wp-content\themes’ folder. After copying the folder, login to the WordPress adminsitration dashboard and click on the ‘Appearance->Themes’ link on the left menu.
In the themes screen you will able to see the theme you just copied.
Now click on the ‘Activate’ button to activate the theme. If you visit the site then you will able to see that the theme of the site has changed t the new theme.
Now you can click on the ‘customize’ button to customize your newly installed theme. You will be able to see the live preview of the changes on the right side.
Each theme will have its own theme options. For example if you want to change the title of the site then click on the Site Identity and change the Site Title. After changing the Site Title press the save button on the top to save the changes.
You can click on the ‘Appearance->Widgets’ to add or remove widgets. For example if your site theme supports side bar and has widget area on the side bar then you can drag and drop the available widgets like ‘Archives’ into the widget area. So now the theme side bar will show the archive of your posts.
